Senior Solutions Engineer – Payments

Location: Remote (Global)

Team: Customer Engineering

About Basis Theory

Basis Theory provides a fully programmable vault that enables fintechs and merchants to securely collect, store, and use sensitive payment data. Our PCI Level 1, SOC 2 Type II, and ISO 27001–compliant platform sits at the intersection of technology and commerce, helping companies design flexible, scalable, and compliant payment architectures.

Founded by operators from Twilio, Klarna, and Dwolla, we’ve raised over $50M from Bessemer Venture Partners, Costanoa Ventures, Stage 2 Capital, and Kindred Ventures. We are a remote-first company with a globally distributed team and an annual company retreat in a new tropical location each year. 🌴

The Role

We’re looking for a Payments-focused Senior Solutions Engineer who deeply understands the card ecosystem end-to-end — from tokenization and vaulting to PSP integrations, acquirers, PCI scope reduction, and payment orchestration.

You’ll partner directly with fintechs, merchants, and platforms building complex payment stacks. You will lead architecture discussions, guide technical evaluations, support migrations, and ensure successful implementations leveraging Basis Theory’s programmable vault.

This role is highly consultative, hands-on, and cross-functional — ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of technical depth and customer impact.

What You’ll Do

Solution Architecture & Pre-Sales

  • Lead architecture and solution design discussions with prospects and customers.
  • Serve as the primary technical lead during POCs and technical evaluations.
  • Partner with Sales to remove technical blockers and accelerate deal cycles.

Implementation & Migration

  • Drive integration projects from design to production.
  • Guide customers through payment migrations and replatforming initiatives.
  • Ensure implementation quality, security, and timeline alignment.

Payments Expertise

  • Design secure frontend + backend payment architectures.
  • Advise on:
  • Card lifecycle (authorization, capture, refund, chargeback)
  • Tokenization & vaulting strategies
  • PCI DSS scope reduction
  • Event-driven and webhook-based payment flows
  • High-availability payment system design

Internal Impact

  • Contribute reusable solution kits, design patterns, and reference architectures.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering to translate customer insights into roadmap input.

Required Experience

  • 5+ years in a customer-facing technical role (Solutions Engineering, Sales Engineering, Implementation Engineering, Solutions Architecture, or similar).
  • Hands-on experience integrating with PSPs, gateways, acquirers, or card networks.
  • Strong API fluency (REST, authentication patterns, webhooks).
  • Working knowledge of backend technologies (Python, Node.js, or similar).
  • Deep understanding of PCI DSS and card data handling best practices.
  • Experience leading technical conversations with both engineers and executives.

Preferred Experience

  • Card network tokenization (e.g., Visa / Mastercard network tokens).
  • Payment orchestration or multi-PSP environments.
  • BIN management, routing logic, retries.
  • Fraud, risk, or chargeback tooling exposure.
  • Supporting complex payment migrations.

Who This Role Is Perfect For

  • A Payments Solutions Engineer
  • A Technical Account Manager supporting card processing integrations.
  • An Implementation Engineer guiding merchants through PCI compliance.
  • A Backend Engineer who transitioned into customer-facing payments architecture.

Core Competencies

  • Operates autonomously with strong judgment in fast-moving environments.
  • Builds credibility with both technical and executive stakeholders.
  • Communicates complex technical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Takes ownership of ambiguous problems and drives progress.
  • Resourceful and pragmatic — makes forward progress without perfect inputs.
